JnU student commits suicide, blaming ‘abusive’ classmate, assistant proctor on Facebook

Fairuz Abantika, a student of Law Department of Jagannath University in 2017-18 academic year, committed suicide on Friday night.

Before Fairuz Abantika committed suicide, in a long Facebook post, she blamed the university's assistant proctor Din Islam and her classmate Amman Siddiqui for the incident.

Assistant Proctor Din Islam has been exempted from administration over the incident. The university administration temporarily suspended him from all administrative and academic activities. Besides, a five-member probe committee has been formed under the leadership of the Dean of the Faculty of Law for proper investigation of this incident. Besides, the accused classmate Amman Siddiqui has been temporarily expelled.

Professor Dr. Jahangir Hossain, the Proctor of the University, in this regard said, “We know the matter that of the accused is a member of our proctorial team. The Vice-Chancellor gave verbal instructions to suspend him temporarily. Further action will be taken subject to investigation in the legal process.”

On the other hand, denying the allegations, Assistant Professor and Assistant Proctor Din Islam said, "I have no involvement with it. We talked about Amman with the Abontika a year and a half ago. I want appropriate action to be taken subject to proper investigation of this incident.”

In this regard, Amman Siddiqui said I have not had any contact with her for a long time. I am not even connected with her on facebook, messenger or anywhere. These allegations are baseless without evidence.”

The elder brother of the victim, Jawad Apurba confirmed the matter of death  to The Bangladesh Pratidin and said she died by hanging herself with a fan at her home in Comilla's Thakurpara at 9:30 pm on Friday (March 15).
