A Dhaka court on Sunday sentenced expelled Jubo League leader SM Golam Kibria Shamim, known as GK Shamim, and his seven bodyguards to life imprisonment in an arms case.
Third Additional Metropolitan Session Court Judge Sheikh Samidul Islam passed the judgment.
The seven bodyguards are Md Jahidul Islam, Md Shahidul Islam, Md Kamal Hossain, Md Samsad Hossain, Md Aminul Islam, Md Delwar Hossain and Md Murad Hossain.They were brought to the court from jail in the morning.
Later, the tribunal recorded statements of 10 prosecution witnesses, including the complainant of the case.
GK Shamim, who was known as an influential contractor in Sabujbagh, Basabo and Motijheel areas of the capital, was arrested on September 20, 2019.
On October 27, 2019, RAB filed a charge sheet against the accused in the arms case.
The official trial proceeding in the case began on February 28, after the court framed charges against the eight accused rejecting an appeal for acquittal.
GK Shamim amassed the wealth through tender manipulation at government departments and extortion at bus terminals and cattle markets and laundered the money.
He was also allegedly involved with the casino business in the capital.
RAB conducted a drive at his Gulshan residence on September 20, 2019, and recovered a huge amount of drugs, cash, arms and FDR.
Three separate cases were filed in this connection.
