UK envoy calls on Nasrul Hamid

British High Commissioner in Dhaka Sarah Cooke on Tuesday paid a courtesy call on State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid at his secretariat office in the capital.

During the call on, they discussed various issues including mutual interest, reports BSS.

Expressing positive changes of Bangladesh, Sarah Cooke said the initiative to increase regional connectivity is appreciable.

She said the UK wants to work with SREDA in wind lab, offshore wind guide lines, capacity building on carbon pricing and trading and piloting solar irrigation pumps in farmer friendly model.

During the meeting, they also discussed power import from India, Nepal or Bhutan. Bangladesh's electricity and energy situation, foreign investment in electricity and energy sector, deep sea gas-oil exploration, offshore wind power, electricity from waste, electricity from renewable sources, solar irrigation pump, solar mini grid, electricity import, social change in electrification.

The state minister described about the Integrated Energy and Power Master Plan, Transmission Line and Privatization, Life Line Consumer, Energy Transmission, Net Metering System, Electric Vehicle, Energy Mix etc.

Later, the High Commissioner invited the State Minister to participate in Cop-28.

Nasrul Hamid welcomed the ambassador and said that the economy of Bangladesh is growing day by day, adding, "Investment opportunities in power and energy sector are increasing continuously. The UK investment in this sector is not seen much."

He urged the UK to invest in power and energy sector of Bangladesh. "We can work together to develop iron ore or iron mining," he added.

The government has a plan to generate 40 percent of electricity from clean energy by 2041. The expansion of renewable energy requires free flow of technology and in this regard the UK can extend their cooperation, Nasrul added.
