4 customs employees held over missing of 55kg gold from vault at HSIA

Four officers and employees of Dhaka Customs have been detained for interrogation over missing of 55kg of gold from a vault at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIS) in the capital.

Law enforcers detained Shahidul Islam, Saidul Islam Shahed, Masum Rana and Muzammel Hossain on Sunday night, police sources said, reports The Daily Sun.

Earlier, a case was filed against eight officers and security guards of Dhaka Customs House over the incident.

Dhaka Customs House filed the case with Airport Police Station early on Monday.

The gold bars and ornaments might have been stolen from the vault of Dhaka Customs House from 2020 and to August in the running year, said sources.

The house also formed a five-member probe committee in this regard.

The customs authorities kept seized gold at two storages or vaults of the airport.

Customs Commissioner AKM Nurul Huda Azad said that the gold had been stolen from one of the vaults.

This contained 200 kg of gold bars and ornaments. On Saturday, the officers concerned opened and found that about 145 kg of the precious metal got lost, he said.

He said that they informed police and intelligence agencies of the matter.

According to the Customs Act-1969, the customs must deposit the seized gold to Bangladesh Bank (BB) within seven days since the seizure.

Now, a question arises why the gold was kept in the vault for a long time.

On the keeping for a long time, the commissioner said that the owners were supposed to take the gold bars and ornaments after paying fine and tax and so those were not deposited to the BB.
