'One-minute silence' programme observed in capital

A one-minute silence programme as part of the government's campaign to increase public awareness about noise pollution was held in front of the Bangladesh Secretariat on Sunday.

The secretariat area alongside other parts of the city was kept noise-free for one minute from 10 am to 10:01 am.

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Shahab Uddin was present at the programme as the chief guest.

He said the one-minute silence programme was held today (Sunday) only in the capital Dhaka.

The programme will be observed across the country, he added.

However, the time duration will be increased up to 24 hours in phases, asserted the minister.

He also urged the people to assist the government’s plan to protect the country from sound pollution.

Deputy Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Habibun Nahar, the ministry’s secretary Farhina Ahmed, representatives from the transport owners and workers organisations, employees of the ministry, police, local public representatives and scout members were present at the programme.
