Benazir can get 15-day extension to comply with summon order: ACC

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) can grant 15 days to former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed and his family members to appear before the commission, complying with its summon notice.

“If the ACC summons anyone, the law does not make it clear whether he or she is obligated to appear before the commission,” ACC Commissioner Zahurul Haque said this while talking to the reporters about its summon notice to Benazir and his family members on Tuesday, Daily Sun reported.

“If he or she does not appear, it is assumed they have no testimony to provide. However, they have the opportunity to request additional time, and the commission then can grant up to 15 days. This decision rests with the commissioner,” he added.

Earlier on 28 May, ACC summoned Benazir Ahmed and his family members to appear at its office on 6 June and 9 June respectively to quiz them in connection with their indulgence in corruption.

The ACC chairman said the commission will undertake legal measures if he is found guilty after verifying the relevant papers and documents in over his misdeeds and corruption.

When asked about the whereabouts of the former IGP, he said he does not know anything specific but assured that the commission is doing everything possible to conduct a fair investigation.

“There is no bar to run the trial in absence of the accused,” said the ACC chairman.
