Factories to be shut down if get attacked: BGMEA

Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has sent directives to the garments factories to get closed if they’re get attacked in the name of movements of minimum wages.

BGMEA president Faruque Hassan on Tuesday said this in a press conference held on ‘Current Labor Situation’ in BGMEA complex in Uttara of the capital.

He said, “Outsiders are inciting to mislead the workers in the ongoing situation. Two workers lost their lives in an unexpected incident. In this situation, for the safety of the workers and the factory, the factory owners can close the factory under Section 13 of the Labor Act. However, the workers won’t get any salary during the shutdown."

In response to a journalist's question about worker dissatisfaction, the BGMEA president said the situation in industrial areas is changing every moment. I am forced to take this decision to tackle the situation in the interest of protecting the industry.

Regarding the wages of the workers, he said the government has formed a wage board. The owners will implement the decision given by the government through discussion. The minimum wage issue will be finalized in November, which will be implemented from December.
