BGMEA shuts 130 factories sine die

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) President Faruque Hassan said all activities of 130 garment factories have remained shut for an indefinite period to save employees, workers and property of the factories.

He revealed the information at a press conference held at the BGMEA office in the capital’s Uttara on Sunday.

The BGMEA president said many factories are being vandalized in the name of movement despite hiking the wages of the workers. Some unruly workers beat some employees up after the announcement of the new wages and operated massive destruction on the factory premises. In this situation, the authorities of 130 factories in Ashulia, Kashimpur, Mirpur and Konabari have taken the decision to close the factories sine die.

However, the operation of other factories will be continued, he added.

Faruque Hassan said a total of 317 garment factories were shut during 2020-21 due to the Covid-19 pandemic and 260 factories have been closed in the post-Covid-era due to various reasons.

Directors of the organisation were present at the press conference.
