Poet Sufia Kamal’s death anniversary observed

The 23rd death anniversary of poet Begum Sufia Kamal, a pioneer of Bengali women's emancipation observed across the country on Sunday in a befitting manner.

Sufia Kamal was born on June 20, 1911, in the Nabab family in Shayestabad of Barisal. 

On that day in 1999, Begum Sufia Kamal died in Dhaka.

She was a renowned poet, writer, feminist and pioneer of the progressive women's movement of modern Bangladesh.

Marking the day, Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote paid rich tribute on Sunday to the poet by placing a floral wreath at her grave at Azimpur graveyard in the capital.

A special prayer was also offered seeking the salvation of the departed soul of Sufia Kamal.

Later, a discussion was held on the occasion of the death anniversary.

Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote general secretary Arun Sarkar Rana presided over the discussion while its executive president and artist of Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra Rafiqul Alam, among others, spoke the discussion.

Speakers in the discussion called upon all to work unitedly to build a non-communal developed Bangladesh with the spirit of poet Sufia Kamal.
