Australia stun Denmark to reach last 16

Solitary goal of Mathew Leckie powers Australia to beat ‘strong’ Denmark and helped his team to go to the last 16 of the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 2006. The upset took place on Wednesday at Al Janoub Stadium, reports UNB.

Australia scored the only goal of the match in the 60th minute of the game. They broke the heart of Denmark in a counterattack.

Kasper Hjulmand, the Denmark coach, tried his best and brought all of his power to the field to oust Australia, but they could not do that. Australia managed to keep their cool til the end of the match.

Australia started creating chances from the begging of the match. But it took them an hour to finally break the deadlock of the defense of Denmark.

Had a penalty call not been denied by the offside, Denmark would have conceded another goal. Denmark, however, won the ball possession by far, but that was not enough for them to avoid a shocking defeat.

With this win against Denmark, Australia marched to the last 16 as the runners-up of Group D of the 2022 World Cup. France, the current world champions, marched to the next round as the champions of the same group, despite losing the last group match to Tunisia. The last time Australia qualified for the Round of 16 in the 2006 World Cup where they lost to Italy.
