Mexico fail to reach round of 16 despite win over Saudi Arabia

Mexico are out of the FIFA World Cup despite win over Saudia Arabia by 2-1. They got the same points as Polland, but they fell behind on the goals scored, reports UNB.

As Polland have better fair play points, Mexico would have been exited even if they had the same points, and the same goal scored. Hence, they had to win by at least 3 goals; however, failed to do that.

Let alone scoring more goals, they, in contrast, conceded a goal in the extra time when Al Dawsari ran into and scored for Saudi Arabia.

When Saudi Arabia got the goal, Mexico were rushing for a third goal that would have helped them to march to the next round.

Earlier in the match, Henry Martin scored for Mexico in the 47th minute. Five minutes later, Luis Chavez doubled the difference. They also got some more chances but failed to capitalize on those.

It was the first time since the 1990 World Cup that Mexico failed to advance from the group stage.
