Conjoined twins Nuha and Naba separated at BSMMU

Surgeons at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) have successfully separated the conjoined twins Nuha and Naba after a 15-hour surgery on Monday night, reports Daily Sun.

It was the final phase of the surgery to separate the attached spine of the babies, while the first phase of the surgery was performed on 31 January last year.

Confirming the matter on Tuesday noon, BSMMU Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Sharfuddin Ahmed said a 100-member medical team, including 39 expert physicians led by Faculty of Surgery Dean Prof Mohammad Hossain, conducted the surgery that commenced at 9:00 am on Monday.

Health Minister Samanta Lal Sen visited the separated babies at the hospital on Tuesday, he added.

Nuha and Naba were born to the couple Alamgir Rana and Nasrin in the Kathalbari area of Kurigram Sadar upazila on 21 March 2022.

The twins shared the same spine at birth.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina funded the surgery to separate the attached spine.
