Hamas sending team to Egypt for ceasefire talks

Hamas is sending a delegation to Cairo on Sunday for ceasefire talks.

The group says its demands include a permanent ceasefire, the withdrawal of the Israeli army from Gaza and the return of the displaced people to their homes, among others, Al Jazeera reported.

Basem Naim has spoken to Al Jazeera about the ceasefire talks that are expected to resume tomorrow in Cairo and insisted that the group will not back down on its core demands.

“What we are calling for should not be part of any negotiations because when we are negotiating for a ceasefire, it means that we are heading towards a ceasefire. When we are negotiating a ceasefire, it means the Israeli troops which invaded Gaza after October 7 have to leave the Gaza Strip,” the Hamas official said.

The Israeli army says it has recovered the body of captive Elad Katzir from the Gaza Strip.

Meanwhile, WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says the UN agency and other partner organisations have managed to reach the medical complex Gaza City following Israel’s deadly two-week siege.

“The team witnessed at least five dead bodies during the mission. Most of the buildings in the hospital complex are extensively destroyed and the majority of assets damaged or reduced to ashes. Even restoring minimal functionality in the short term seems implausible,” he said in a post on X.
