Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar chaired an urgent all-party meeting on Tuesday to address the political upheaval in Bangladesh following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the military’s takeover amid violent protests, reports NDTV.
Jaishankar briefed party leaders on the volatile situation in Bangladesh and outlined the Indian government’s measures to mitigate potential security, economic, and diplomatic impacts. He emphasized that the government is closely monitoring developments and coordinating with the Bangladeshi Army to ensure the safety of Indian nationals and minorities in the neighboring country.
"It's a prevailing situation. The government will take appropriate action at the right time," Jaishankar assured the MPs. He added that Sheikh Hasina, currently in Delhi, would soon inform the Indian government about her plans.Sources revealed that the Indian Foreign Minister discussed strategies to support the ousted leader and manage relations with the new interim government set to be formed by the Bangladeshi military.
Alongside Jaishankar, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju were present at the meeting.
Sheikh Hasina resigned on Monday and fled the country as massive protests called for her ouster. Following her resignation, Army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman announced the formation of an interim government and appealed for calm among protesters.
