Bangladesh reaffirms commitment to global disarmament

Bangladesh has called for decisive collective action against nuclear threats while advocating for the peaceful use of nuclear energy, reports BSS.

Md. Jashim Uddin, the Foreign Secretary has made this call while speaking at the First Committee of the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on Tuesday.

In his speech, the foreign secretary reaffirmed Bangladesh's steadfast commitment to general and complete disarmament, emphasizing the necessity of global peace and security. He highlighted the inalienable rights of all states to utilize nuclear energy for peaceful purposes while also emphasizing the importance of preventing its misuse.

He also encouraged UN Member States to harness technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) to promote peace instead of conflict.

During his address to the Second Committee of UNGA79, the foreign secretary stressed the need for concrete actions to achieve the goals of the "Pact of the Future." His statement identified key areas of focus, including comprehensive reform of the global financial system, particularly the sovereign debt framework, and stronger climate action.

Furthermore, the foreign Secretary also talked about the the importance of tackling illicit financial flows, promoting economic diversification, and fostering resilience through youth-driven initiatives, technological investment, and human capital development.

Bangladesh's appeal at the UNGA reflects its broader vision for a secure and prosperous world.
