Bangladesh prioritizes environmental conservation in dev initiatives: Nasrul at Berlin Energy Dialogue

State Minister for Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources, Nasrul Hamid, in an announcement that underscores Bangladesh's commitment to sustainable development, has declared that environmental conservation is a top priority in all of the country's development activities and this approach is particularly evident in the progress towards sustainable agriculture and the adoption of renewable energy sources.

Speaking at the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue 2024 on Wednesday, during a panel discussion titled "Dialogue Hub: Energy-Water-Food Nexus: Holistic solutions for food and water supply powered by renewables," Hamid outlined the remarkable strides Bangladesh is making in renewable energy, specifically in transitioning from diesel to solar irrigation pumps.

This shift not only aims to reduce carbon emissions but also to conserve groundwater resources, thereby maintaining environmental balance.

Hamid revealed ambitious plans to install 45,000 solar irrigation pumps by 2031, which is expected to benefit approximately 1.3 million farmers across the country. This initiative will significantly reduce diesel usage and mitigate the adverse effects of climate change.

To curb the excessive extraction of groundwater, Hamid emphasised the need to increase the use and investment in renewable energy. He highlighted the role of international cooperation in fostering innovation, adopting modern technologies, securing financial support, and exchanging expertise to achieve sustainable development.

He urged developed countries, including Germany, to take a leading role in technology transfer.

Representatives from participating countries at the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue 2024 were present during Hamid's address, signaling a collaborative effort towards global sustainability.
