Evidence of Benazir's corruption found: ACC lawyer

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has found evidence of amassing wealth beyond known sources of income by former inspector general of police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed and his family members.

While talking to the media on Thursday, ACC lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan said, “Evidence of Benazir’s corruption has been found. If the commission thinks to lodge cases, the anti-graft watchdog can do so,” reports The Daily Sun.

A Dhaka court has so far ordered three times the seizure of movable and immovable assets owned by the ex-IGP and his family members in view of the ACC’s applications.

On Wednesday, Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Mohammed Ash-Shams Joglul Hossain ordered the confiscation of eight flats, garment factory shares and some land belonging to Benazir, his wife Zeeshan Mirza, and their daughters.

The court ordered to freeze movable property and seize immovable property as per Section 14 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2012 and Rule 18 of the Anti-Corruption Commission, Rules-2007.

Benazir's seized immovable properties include 24 kathas of land in Rupganj of Narayanganj, 3 kathas of land in Uttara, two flats in a building built on 13.66 kathas of land in Badda, and 25 acres of land (lease) in Bandarban district. Apart from this, there are six flats in the name of Benazir's wife Zeeshan Mirza in the Pisciculture Housing area in Adabar, Dhaka.

His movable properties that were ordered to be frozen include shares in Citizen TV and Tower Apparels Limited. All these properties are in the name of former IGP Benazir Ahmed, his wife, and daughters Farheen Rishta Binte Benazir, Tahseen Raisa Binte Benazir, and Zahra Zareen Binte Benazir.

On 23 May and 26 May, the same Dhaka court ordered the seizure of 198 acres of land belonging to the family of Benazir.

Besides, 38 bank accounts of Benazir's family have been blocked. The court has also ordered the seizure of a company owned by the family. At that time, the court ordered the seizure of four flats in Dhaka's Gulshan in the name of Benazir Ahmed's family members.
