Executioner Shahjahan Bhuiyan passes away

Former chief executioner of Dhaka Central Jail Shahjahan Bhuiyan died at a hospital in the capital today. He was 74, reports Daily Sun.

Confirming the death information, Ahad Ali, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sher-E-Bangla Nagar Police Station, said Shahjahan Bhuiyan was admitted at the Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital last night after complaining of chest pain.

The hangman died in the morning, the OC added.

Shahjahan Bhuiyan was born in Ichakhali village of Palash upazila in Narsingdi. After appearing Higher Secondary Education, he was engaged in local politics. He was sentenced to 42 years in a killing and arms case. His sentence was reduced to 32 years for execution and other reasons.

He came to the limelight by executing the death sentences of 60 people convicted in the cases including Bangabandhu's killer, war criminals, top leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami and JMB. He was freed from Dhaka Central Jail on 18 June 2023 after 44 years of imprisonment.
