US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller has said his country objects to any efforts to harass or intimidate journalists to prevent them from conducting their important work, reports Daily Sun.
He made the comments at a State Department press briefing on Monday.
When asked about the Bangladesh Police Service Association’s “threatening statement aimed at media outlets reporting on police corruption,” Miller said, “We strongly support the role of a free and independent media in maintaining effective democratic institutions and promoting government transparency.“We object to any efforts to harass or intimidate journalists to prevent them from conducting their important work,” he said.
The Bangladesh Police Service Association (BPSA) recently urged the media to maintain more caution and proper adherence to journalistic ethics in reporting about the force, as recent graft reports came to its notice.
Recent media reports unearthed hidden empires of undisclosed earnings of some current and former government officials.
Meanwhile, protests continued to pour in against the BPSA statement.
