Two armed members of the Myanmar Border Guard Police (BGP) and 31 Rohingyas have taken refuge on St. Martin's Island, Bangladesh, amidst the ongoing conflict between Myanmar's ruling junta and an armed rebel group.
A trawler carrying these Myanmar nationals arrived on the island in the early hours of Friday.
Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Adnan Chowdhury said, “I have also heard the news. They are currently under the custody of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). However, the BGB has not yet informed me about the details.”BGB Subedar Sanwar Hossain confirmed the arrival of the BGP personnel and Rohingyas, stating that he was heading to the location and would provide more information later.
Mujibur Rahman, chairman of St. Martin's union parishad, reported that the trawler carrying passengers from Maungdaw, Myanmar, landed on the island amid inclement weather.
Members of the BGB have taken the group into custody at a resort on the northern side of the island, he added.
