Linguist and researcher professor Dr Mahbubul Haque passed away.

Mahbubul breathed his last while undergoing treatment at a hospital in the capital on Wednesday night.

His body will be brought to his residence in Bhatara, Dhaka, on Thursday afternoon. Following his namaj-e-janaza, he will be taken to Chattogram, where he will be buried in his family graveyard, Daily Sun reports.

He got the Bangla Academy Literary Award in 2018 for his contributions to essays and the Ekushey Padak in 2019 for his contributions to research.

Haque was born on November 3, 1948, in Modhukhali, Faridpur, and later grew up in Chattogram.

He graduated with honors in Bengali language and literature from the University of Chattogram in 1969, obtained his master's degree from the same department in 1970, and earned his PhD from the same university in 1997.

He taught at Rangunia College and Chattogram University College before joining the Bengali Department at the University of Chattogram.

Among his notable works are: "Bangla Bananer Niyom" (Rules of Bengali Spelling), "Rabindra Sahitya Rabindra Bhavna" (Rabindranath's Literature and Thoughts), "Itihas O Sahitya" (History and Literature), "Sanskriti O Lok Sanskriti" (Culture and Folk Culture), and "Banglar Lok Sahitya: Samaj O Sanskriti" (Folk Literature of Bengal: Society and Culture).
