US asks non-essential embassy workers to leave Bangladesh

US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said the United States has approved the voluntary departure of all non-essential workers and their family members at the US embassy in Dhaka.

He gave this information at the regular briefing of the US State Department last Wednesday local time.

Miller also said, “We have already made clear our concerns about the ongoing law and order situation in Bangladesh. We are reviewing all options to ensure the safety of our staff in Dhaka. We have authorized the voluntary departure of non-essential US Embassy personnel and their families there.”

He also said, “The embassy is open to provide consular and other services to US citizens in Bangladesh. The safety and security of any US citizen must be our number one priority. Any American concerned about their safety and security. We encourage them to contact their embassy.”

In response to a question whether the US Embassy in Dhaka is fully operational or not, Miller said surely it is operational.
