Speculation about advisers to interim government

The oath-taking ceremony of the new interim government, headed by Nobel laureate Prof Muhammad Yunus, is set to be held on Thursday night.

Although the name of the head of the government has been announced, the list of the advisers has yet to be disclosed triggering widespread speculation.

On Wednesday, Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman indicated that the number of advisers in the interim government could be around 15.

Coordinators of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement already held online and offline meetings with top leaders of several political parties to discuss the issue.

A coordinator told English newspaper Daily Sun that the list of advisers is subject to constant changes because the opinion of the chief adviser is a significant factor.

Meanwhile, various political parties, the Anti-discrimination Student Movement, and even the president proposed a number of names for the post of adviser.

Diplomatic sources said the advisers having links with the Western countries might be included in the interim government.

Sources at Bangabhaban have reported that the president would finalise the names of the advisers after discussing with Prof Dr. Yunus upon his return to the country, and the total number of advisers would be decided then.

The Anti-discrimination Student Movement has proposed that the tenure of the interim government would be three years, according to sources.

Three days after the fall of the autocratic Sheikh Hasina regime in the face of a mass uprising, the interim government is set to be sworn in tonight.

Meanwhile, the Cabinet Division has completed all preparations for the ceremony with the presence of 400 dignitaries.
