UN human rights chief likely to visit Dhaka in September

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk may visit Dhaka in the second week of September.

According to sources in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the UN High Commissioner's Office is in discussion with the Bangladesh government regarding the visit of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to Dhaka. Accordingly, he will come to Dhaka in the second week of September.

During the anti-discrimination student movement in Bangladesh, Volker Turk made several statements calling for the protection of human rights. He said, “There are indications that the country's law enforcement agencies have used excessive force to suppress student protests in Bangladesh.”

Volker Türk's visit will discuss the UN's investigation assistance into the deaths of the student movement.

A three-member United Nations preliminary technical team is currently on a visit to Dhaka to discuss preliminary findings to investigate the overall human rights violations, including the killings during the anti-discrimination movement led by students and mass people.

The delegation is led by Rory Mungoven, Head of the Asia-Pacific Region of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner.
