Writ hearing on banning Awami League adjourned

The High Court has adjourned the hearing of the writ seeking to ban Bangladesh Awami League and cancel the party's registration on the charge of indiscriminate killing of students till next Sunday (September 1).

A High Court bench led by Justice AKM Asaduzzaman passed the order on Tuesday.

Later, the attorney general Asaduzzaman said to the journalists, “The crimes of few leaders of Awami League will be brought under trial. However, the registration of Awami League cannot be canceled for their terrorist activities.”

Earlier, the court had postponed the hearing date last Sunday (August 25).

Before that, on August 19, Arifur Rahman Murad Bhuiyan, on behalf of the human rights organization Sarda Society, filed a petition in the High Court seeking to ban Bangladesh Awami League and cancel the party's registration.

The writ seeks directions to ban and deregister Bangladesh Awami League and bring back Tk 11 lakh crore smuggled abroad.
