Chhanamukhi, a variety of sweets produced only in Brahmanbaria district, has achieved the geographical indication (GI) status from the industries ministry, making it highly likely to be exported abroad, reports Daily Sun.
The ministry’s Directorate of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (DPDT) notified the Brahmanbaria district administration of the registration on 24 September, confirmed Brahmanbaria’s Additional District Administrator Md Saiful Islam.
The district administration applied for securing the GI status in April 2022, and the sweetmeat was enlisted under the Geographical Indication Registration Book in April this year.The GI status on a product recognises it as a unique item produced only in a select area or group of areas in the world. The status acknowledges replicas of the product cannot be found anywhere else in the world.
As per the Brahmanbaria district administration’s website, Chhanamukhi was first produced in Brahmanbaria during the British rule. A kilogram of Chhanamukhi requires 7-8 litres of cow milk which undergoes days of ardous processing.
A kilogram of the sweetmeat is priced at Tk 800, said Dulal Chandra Modok, owner of Adarsha Matri Bhandar sweet shop of Brahmanbaria town.
