Legendary director, producer, lyricist, screenwriter and music director Gazi Mazharul Anwar has passed away in the capital’s United Hospital around 6:30 am on Sunday.

His son Upol confirmed the news of his death.

Singer Momin Biswas said, “Gazi Mazharul Anwar was rushed to United Hospital soon after he fell to the bathroom early Sunday but duty doctor declared him dead. His body is now at the hospital and will be taken later at his Baridhara residence in the capital.”

Mazharul Anwar composed more than 20,000 songs for various media including radio, television, and cinema in a career spanning of 60 years.

He started writing songs for Radio Pakistan from 1964. Liberation war, patriotism, nature, the meaning of life, love, hatred, affection among other topics have been a theme in his writing.

Gazi Mazharul Anwar was born at Daudkandi in Cumilla on February 22 in 1943.

He began his career as a lyricist in 1960s. He wrote many songs for Zahir Raihan’s films, including ‘Kacher Dewal’, ‘Behula’ and ‘Dui Bhai’.

The versatile talent also worked as a lyricist in the ‘Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra’. ‘Ektara Tui Desher Kotha’, ‘Ekbar Jete Dena’, ‘Joy Bangla Banglar Joy’, ‘Amay Jodi Prosno Koro Kolokakolir Desh’ and ‘Ek Nodi Rokto Periye’ are his popular patriotic songs.

He worked with almost every singer and music director of Dhallywood.

Gazi Mazharul Anwar was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2002 for his contribution to the country’s cultural arena.

He also earned the Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Lyricist a record six times for the films ‘Tit for Tat’ (1992), ‘Ajante’ (1996), ‘Churiwala’ (2001), ‘Lal Dariya’ (2002), ‘Kokhono Megh Kokhono Brishti’ (2003) and ‘Meyeti Ekhon Kothay Jabe’ (2016).
