In the running month, up to August, a total of 361 students from schools colleges, universities and madrasas committed suicide. Among them, 169 students were from schools, 96 from colleges and 66 from Universities and the rest 30 from madrasas.  147 among the students were males and 214 were females, which indicate more propensity of committing suicide among the girls. These incidents of suicides were mostly happened in Dhaka division.

In the same period of 2022, the number of death from committing suicide was 364. The above information was revealed in the study titled ‘The increasing rate of committing suicide among students: What’s the solution’ conducted by voluntary organization ‘Anchol.’ The organization published the information online on Saturday.

The tendency of suicide is more seen among female students. Out of 361 students, 59.30 percent female students committed suicide in the last eight months. On the other hand, 40.70 percent of male students committed suicide. Among them, 26.60 percent of female students are due to pride, 18.70 percent are due to love affairs, 8.40 percent are due to mental imbalance, 9.80 percent are due to family disputes, 5.10 percent are due to sexual harassment and 12.60 percent are due to academic stress and failure. committed suicide

According to the survey, 46.8 percent of the students who committed suicide were school goers. Among them, 112 were female students and 57 males. 26.60 percent of those who committed suicide were college going students, 18.30 percent were university students, and madrasa students were 8.31 percent. It can be seen that 13 to 19-year-olds have committed suicide the most. 67.3 percent students committing suicides were from this age group. And the suicide rate of students aged 20 to 25 is 21.6 percent. The suicide rate of students aged 26 to 30 is 2.80 percent, and the suicide rate of students from 1 to 12 years is 8.30 percent.

Depression is an important factor behind student suicide. 31.60 percent students committed suicide due to depression. Apart from this, other reasons behind suicide include love affair, family abuse, sexual abuse, academic pressure, mental instability and family problems.
