Inactive Jubo League frustrates activists

Bangladesh Jubo League, the associate organization of the ruling Awami League, has become inactive as the youth body can’t give new district committees for 31 years and other reasons.

City and upazila units of the organizations are also passing days without proper political activities. Central leaders of the Jubo League are busy with other tasks. The wife of a top leader allegedly controls party posts.

Sources said there are no activities of 57 units out of 78 organisational districts of Jubo League, which is considered the vanguard of the Awami League. Jubo League now only runs day-based programmes. The incumbent central committee gave some district committees but didn’t announce the council programme. Central leaders announced the ‘Facebook committee’ after several months of the council. Post-expected leaders are very disappointed lack of proper initiative of the central committee.

Contacted, Jubo League General Secretary Mainul Hossain Nikhil told Bangladesh Pratidin that all units of the organization including districts, Dhaka North and Dhaka South will be formed after Eid-ul-Fitr to vibrate the organization.

Party insiders said the Barishal district unit Jubo League was formed in 1993 led by Zakir Hossain and Fazlul Karim Shahin for two years. Surprisingly, this committee passed 31 years and leaders of the committee are now important leaders of district Awami League. Zakir Hossain is now joint general secretary of the Barishal Awami League and Fazlul Karim Shahin is the Information and Research Secretary of the same unit. No new Jubo League leadership has been created due to the lack of a new committee.

Natore district Jubo League council was held in 1998.  Shariful Islam Ramjan was elected as the president of the unit while current lawmaker Shafiqul Islam Shimul and Syed Mostaque Ali Mukul got equal votes as general secretary. Later, in 2000, the central committee approved the Natore committee declaring Shafiqul Islam Shimul as general secretary. Shimul and Shariful Islam Ramjan become general secretaries of the district Awami League.

The last committee of Kishoreganj district Jubo League was formed in 2012. District Awami League Organising Secretary Aminul Islam Bokul was made convener of the committee while Ruhul Amin was joint convener. The 90-day tenure convener committee passed 12 years and most of the conveners have been posted at the district Awami League committee. For this reason, the Kishoreganj Jubo League remains inactive for long days.

Shariatpur district Jubo League was formed in 2005 led by MM Jahangir, Golam Mostafa and Nuhun Madbar. MM Jahangir later becomes Shariatpur municipality Awami League president, Golam Mostafa becomes general secretary of Sadar Upazila Awami League and district Jubo League organizing secretary Kawser Ahmed Toki becomes Science and Technology Affairs Secretary of the district Awami League. Now new Jubo League committee has been announced in the district for 19 years.

The last committee of the Nilphamari district Jubo League was formed in 2005. Many leaders of that committee are now leaders of the district Awami League. Only 7-8 leaders are active in the organization. The relationship between the district and Upazila Jubo League is not also good.

Cox’s Bazar Jubo League was formed in 2016, Dhaka North and Dhaka South committee was formed in 2012, and Bogura Jubo League was formed in 2000.

Jubo League sources said currently 57 committees are expired including Gazipur, Faridur, Joypurhat, Satkhira, Cumilla South district, Chapainawabganj, Rajshahi, Pabna, Sylhet, Thakurgaon, Panchagarh, Gaibandha, Narayanganj, Mymensingh, Netrokona, Habiganj, Sunamganj, Pabna, Noakhali, Chandpur, Laxmipur, Dinajpur and Naogaon.
