The prices of the vegetables have increased due to the rain at a regular interval. And the increased prices of the vegies hit consumers at the kitchen market hardly.

A week earlier, each kg of green chilies being sold for between Tk 180 and Tk 220, now the price is almost doubled with up to Tk400. Price of tomatoes also increased by Tk100 per kg, tomatoes are sold at Tk250 per kg.

The price of everyday goods including vegetables went out of general people’s reach. Hence, there is dissatisfaction amongst consumers.

Roaming several kitchen markets of capital’s Khilkhet, Pragati Sarani, Badda, Rampura on Monday, our correspondent came up with these information.

A shopkeeper of Solmaid Momtaz kitchen market of Pragati Sarani area said that the prices of vegetables are in rise for days.

“People buy 25, 50, 100 grams of coriander as it is sold for 600 taka per kg,” he said adding that the corianders are also faded. 

“Because of insufficient supply of vegetables in the market, the price gets higher day by day.”

The vegetables price at other kitchen market is changing upwards too. Most of the vegetables are sold at Tk80-150. The price of asparagus beans has increased by 30-70 taka and now being sold at Tk140-150. The price of eggplants has reached at Tk160-180 with an increase of Tk60 per kg. 

Big bitter gourd for Tk120, small bitter gourd for 100, cucumbers for 80, papayas for 40-45, carrot for 140, pointed gourd for 80, snake gourd for 100, sponge gourd for 100, and ladies fingers for 80 available in the kitchen markets. 

A quadruple of lemon Lemon and Banana is sold for Tk40 and 50 respectively. Each kg potato is being sold for 60, onion for 110-120, ginger for 250 and garlic for 220. 

Since Monday the price of egg has increased by 10-15 taka per dozen. A dozen of farm eggs costs 180 taka while normal chicken eggs are being sold at 210-220 taka. The price of the chicken has also increased by 10-20 taka within the difference of a week. The prices of the broiler, and sonali chicken are  Tk 220 and 280 respectively. 

Advocate Humayun Kabir Bhuiyan, general secretary of Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB), said that businessmen are raising the price of everyday commodities showing excuse of floods, drought, dollars crisis.

“The price of a product may increases slightly not as much as it happens in reality. There is no logical reason behind the price hike. I think there is an unscrupulous class among traders who look for opportunities. When they get a chance, they take all from the consumers’ pocket,” he added.

“To control the price hike agencies have to work altogether.”
