Southee, Boult demolish WI batting order to earn series parity

Pacer Tim Southee and Trent Boult combined to demolish the West Indies top-order batting as New Zealand scored a series-levelling victory in the second One-Day International (ODI) of a three-match series at Kensington Oval in Barbados on Friday, reports Cricbuzz.

Southee and Bolt claimed three wickets apiece as the home side limped to 63 for seven off 22.4 overs when a second heavy shower resulted in a prolonged delay to the day/night fixture.

Finn Allen's 117-ball 96 was worth its weight in gold in a game where bowlers made merry, in Barbados.

Allen's effort pushed the visitors just past the 200-run mark but that was more than enough as the experienced duo of Tim Southee and Trent Boult accounted for seven wickets between them to bundle out the hosts for just 161 in a rain-interrupted fixture.

New Zealand batters struggled once Nicholas Pooran inserted them to set a target. By the 10th over, they lost three of their top-four and were in desperate need of a partnership to get them out of the wreckage.

Daryl Mitchell walked in at 31 for 3 and added a 84-run partnership with Allen to take the team total past 100 before another collapse ensued. New Zealand went from 115 for 3 to 167 for 8, and were staring at the possibility of finishing with a sub-200 score.

Mitchell Santner (26* off 27) and Trent Boult (16 off 13) frustrated the West Indies bowlers at the end to take their side to 212 by the time Kevin Sinclair had the latter caught and bowled off his own bowling to finish with a four-fer.

Boult and Southee ran riot against the West Indies top-order, reducing them to 27 for 6 by the 10th over.

The carnage included the exit of captain Pooran for two while Kyle Mayers and Shamarh Brooks fell for ducks.
