Dawid Malan overcame the tigers' much-vaunted spin attack, showing an unwavering resolve as England secured a three-wicket victory in the first of three-match ODI series at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Wednesday, reports BSS and UNB.

The left-hand batter hit an unbeaten 114 off 145, smashing eight fours and four sixes to script the victory, giving England a 1-0 lead in the series.

Bangladesh rode on Najmul Hossain Shanto's 58 but England's disciplined attack left the hosts at least 20 runs short.

The home side spins attack, which fashioned many victories at home yard proved to be tough to deal with.

Left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan (1-45) struck in the first over, dismissing Jason Roy (4) while another left-arm spinner Taijul Islam removed Phil Salt for 12.

Trusting his defence, Malan held together the innings astutely but other batters struggled against the spinners, much to the dismay of England fans.

Taijul who had figures of 3-54 had James Vince stumped for 6 before fast bowler Taskin Ahmed got the better of captain Jos Buttler with a delivery that carried extra bounce.

The partnership between Malan and Jacks was key in steadying the innings.

Moeen Ali contributed with 14 while Adil Rashid accompanied him with 17 not out as Malan fittingly sealed the deal, hitting Shanto for a boundary through mid-on.

Earlier, Bangladesh struggled to build momentum and were eventually all out for 209 runs, with Najmul Hosssian Shanto being the only player to score a half-century for the hosts in Mirpur.

Despite winning the toss and opting to bat first, Bangladesh got off to a shaky start as their opening partnership between Tamim Iqbal and Litton Das produced just 33 runs before Litton was dismissed for 7. Tamim was unable to maintain a steady pace and also fell shortly after.

The pace bowling duo of Mark Wood and Chris Woakes proved to be formidable for the Bangladesh openers.

Najmul Hossain Shanto provided some stability for Bangladesh, scoring his first ODI half-century by the 31st over.

However, Shanto was unable to convert it into a century and fell short at 58 runs. All-rounder Mahmudullah Riyad was the second-highest scorer for Bangladesh with 31 runs off 48 balls, although he never looked comfortable at the crease.

Mark Wood was the standout performer for England, taking two wickets for 35 runs in eight overs, while Moeen Ali, Jofra Archer, and Adil Rashid also claimed two wickets each.
