Bangladesh U-19 team suffers heartbreaking defeat

Bangladesh U-19 team failed to qualify for the semifinals of the ongoing ICC-U-19 World Cup after they suffered a narrow five-run defeat to their Pakistani counterparts in their last Super Six Group 1 match at Willowmoore Park in Benoni on Saturday, reports Daily Sun.

Bangladesh had to chase down the target of 156 runs set by Pakistan inside 38.1 overs to book their place in the last four as Group 1 runners-up but they faced the wrath of Ubaid Shah and Ali Raza’s bowling in their run chase and were reduced at 83-6 in the 20th over.

Mohammad Shihab James (26) and skipper Mahfuzur Rahman Rabby (13) then shared a 40-run stand for the seventh wicket to bring their side back in the contest but their dismissal in between five deliveries put Bangladesh on the back foot once again.

Rohanat Doullah Borson, who earlier took four wickets in the Pakistan innings, then struck an unbeaten 21 off 24 balls and shared a 23-run stand for the last wicket to take his side close to victory but Maruf Mridha’s (four) getting bowled by Pakistani pacer Mohammad Zeeshan broke Bangladesh’s hearts as they bowled out for 150 runs in 35.5 overs.

Ubaid finished at 5-44 while Raza claimed 3-44.

Earlier, the junior Tigers, who opted to bowl first in the virtual quarterfinal, exhibited a great bowling performance as they bowled their opposition all out for just 155 runs in 40.4 overs.

Borson and Sheikh Paevez Jibon were the chief wreckers in the Pakistan innings as both finished 4-24 to dismantle their opposition’s batting order.

For Pakistan, their number 7 Arafat Minhas made the highest 34 off 40 balls.

India will face hosts South Africa in one semifinal while Pakistan will take on Australia in the other semifinal of the ongoing meet.
